Montegrappa announces availability of the Privilege Gioiello Limited Edition Collection
Montegrappa, Italy’s most revered manufacturer of fine writing instruments, today announced the availability of the Privilege Gioiello luxury pen collection which debuted at this year’s Baselworld in March which is the world’s largest and most important event in the watch and jewelry sector which is held annually in Basel, Switzerland. For a century, Montegrappa’s pens have exhibited the same attention to detail and employed the same artisan skills that are embodied in fine jewelery. The revival of the Privilege Gioiello collection cements Montegrappa’s prestige in the world of luxury writing instruments.
Originally inspired by a model from the 1930’s that was part of Montegrappa’s museum collection, the revamped version of the Privilege Gioiello heralds new engraving techniques and has been enhanced by sterling silver and decorated with new motifs produced by special techniques featuring hand-etched patterns. This technique has never been used on pens before and only two-to-three pens may be produced each day by Montegrappa’s select skilled craftsmen.
The finishes in the Privilege Gioiello collection will feature unique elements applied to all of the metal components in each pen. Employing a “deep drawing” technique to produce barrels and caps without any joints, precious metals in disc form are lengthened, hollowed and shaped to achieve the desired form. Montegrappa has the distinction of being one of the only pen manufacturers to use this technique using sterling silver and 18K gold.
Finishes on the Privilege Gioiello include engraving with the same detail as on the cap to create a “camouflage” effect. Four patterns will be offered including Arctic, with its icy cool reflections; Bark, with a grainy, sylvan surface; Peacock, bearing whorls as would decorate majestic tail-feathers; and Wave, suggesting the flow of water.
Privilege Gioiello will only be available as fountain pen and rollerball in a limited edition of 500 of each style and mode. The luxury pens will feature a panel on the cap that can be personalized with a name, initials or a date to make these precious items an even more personal object whether purchased for personal use or as a gift for a loved one.
Deep Drawing Process
The “deep drawing” process starts with having the disc heated to 800°C to alter the molecular structure of the metals. The disc has to go through the whole “deep drawing” process eight times in order to arrive at the final shape. In between each stage, the metals have to be filed and polished to remove any minute scratches or cracks. The end product is then trimmed to the specific size and engraved as per order. Before the final assembly, all the parts are chemically treated to remove residue and dirt on the pen. Upon completion of the pen manufacturing process, the other parts which include clips, grip sections, feeders and nibs go before stringent scrutiny by the quality control department for any defects.
