Florence is known for its museums, buildings and works of art. But it has got many secrets: a Fifteenth century fresco is probably one of the first advertising examples in history.
The famous Benozzo Gozzoli’s frescos are located in the “Magi Chapel” at Palazzo Medici Riccardi. These frescoes were produced under commission by Piero de’ Medici, Lorenzo the Magnificent’s father. Beyond the religious meaning of the Procession of the Magi, a clear political message is given. The Medici were the rulers of Florence, and the characters shown in the frescoes are actually friends and allies of the Medici family. That’s why these frescoes are probably one of the first examples of advertising in an era — the Renaissance — when television, newspapers, magazines and the Internet were not available yet!
