Curvaceous and sensual Maserati Alfieri draws rave reviews on the show circuit
The new Maserati Alfieri will replace the Maserati Granturismo. The concept’s name refers to Alfieri Maserati, one of the brothers who founded the company. The reduced size of this concept means it will be very different to the current Granturismo, which is a rival for the Jaguar XKR, with reports suggesting the new car will offer a smaller, lighter alternative to the Porsche 911.
Maserati has talked openly in the past about its plans to launch a rival to the 911. Current reports suggest the model could come with both V6 and V8 powertrains. Four-wheel drive is likely to be optional for V8-powered versions in some markets.
The second Maserati model which will be launched at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show is the Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition. This limited edition model will be produced in 100 units, representing each year of Maserati’s 100 year history. Few details have been revealed about the second new model, which will also celebrate the Bologna-based car manufacturer’s centenary this year.
The news of new model launches comes after Maserati posted a 148 percent increase in shipments to 15,400 vehicles last year, driven by the success of the new Quattroporte and Ghibli models. Its major markets include the USA, where 6,900 units were sold, China, Europe and Asia-Pacific. The Middle East alone sold 750 units in 2013, an increase of 81 percent. The company posted a revenue of $2.293bn and a trading profit $236m for 2013.
