Panerai’s iconic dive watch turns ultra-modern
Since the appointment of new Panerai CEO Jean Marc Pontroue – the famed Italian watch brand has been streamlining its offerings into three distinct collections: Submersible, which is a proper dive watch with a proper rotating bezel, the Radiomir, with smooth bezel and no crown guard and the emblematic Luminor, also with a smooth bezel, but is fitted with Panerai’s distinctive crown guard locking system.
This year had big things in the works, including adding to the bestselling Luminor collection with the PAM 1661. At 44mm wide it falls under Panerai’s “medium-sized” case offerings. Unlike many stainless steel Luminor offerings, the lightweight Carbotech case helps make the watch significantly more comfortable and wearable. True to its military diving roots, it’s water-resistant to 300m and has strong legibility due to the ample application of Super-LumiNova allowed by its two-layer “sandwich dial” construction. The lume is a minty blue that’s echoed in the fabric strap’s stitching.
Powered by Panerai’s in-house P.9010 automatic movement offering three days of power reserve, this is a classic Panerai Luminor – but designed with an edgy modern twist.
Price of the Panerai Luminor Carbotech PAM 1661 is $12,800.
