STORY LINE: After a car accident leaves MARCO with 6000 euros in insurance money, he opts to take a summer off between high school and college, and goes to California to enjoy himself. Forced to travel along with MARIE, a provincial Italian girl from a conservative family, Marco’s not happy with his companion, and the feeling is mutual. But after they become the guests of MATT and PAUL, a gay couple who live in San Francisco, both Marco and Marie fall in love — with each other and with their charming hosts.
[MARCO] A handsome young man of 18, Marco lives in Italy with his father, and he’s undecided about his future. After a car accident drops 6000 euros in insurance money in his lap, Marco opts to take a vacation in California and see a little bit of the big world. But Marco gets an unwanted companion: Marie, a much- disliked, testy and ultra-conservative girl from school. Barely able to stand Marie’s irritable and irritating company, he becomes the housemate of Matt and Paul, a gay couple in San Francisco — and Marco winds up stuck on the couch with the dog. Gradually, he becomes romantically attracted to Marie, largely because he’s never far from her — only Marie is pining after Matt, and Marco doesn’t even enter into her field of vision until their warm California summer is almost over…LEAD (1) SPEAKS FLUENT ITALIAN. NUDITY REQUIRED (SCALE + 10)
[MARIE RUSSELOT] About 18 years old, Marie speaks Italian with a faint French accent; she wears glasses and her hair is pulled back, and appears to be neither pretty nor ugly, the kind of person who wouldn’t make heads turn on the street. A classmate of Marco’s, she’s from a very provincial Catholic family, and she’s regarded as the only virgin in their high school class. In fact, Marie is not a virgin, but she does have a harshly judgmental streak, and it’s put off enough men (including Marco) that she’s lonely and love-hungry. Marie knows Vulcano, who arranges for her to travel to California with Marco, whom she regards as a boorish, crass womanizer. All through the trip together, Marie bickers and verbally spars with Marco, and in San Francisco, she’s initially nauseated by the lifestyle of her hosts, Paul and Matt. But Marie’s homophobia loosens and drops away after weeks in San Francisco, and she falls rather hopelessly in love, first with Matt and later with Marco…LEAD (19) SPEAKS FLUENT ITALIAN.
