Umbria is a region in Italy bordering Tuscany, Lazio and Le Marche. With its beautiful countryside, it is often called the country’s green heart. This land is known for its medieval hill towns, dense forests, local cuisine, and particularly foraged truffles and wines.
There are many exceptional products that come out of Umbria. And for those in the United States who would like access to the authentic products of this region, but can’t quite get there themselves…there is Via Umbria based in Georgetown/Washington, DC.
Via Umbria supports and preserves artisanal traditions of the unique Umbria region of Italy with a selection of food, ceramic, wines, a café, cultural center and a special event kitchen.
The store acts as a direct avenue to the rich bounty of Italy’s cuore verde (green heart), providing authentic products as well as an active community of kindred spirits. Passionate Italophile owners Bill and Suzy Menard have developed a number of businesses centered in and around Italy, the common thread of each being a desire to showcase the connectedness that Italians treasure – connections with their past, their culture and each other.
Their pop-up store opened in the fall of 2014, and in fall 2015 a new concept, complete with fresh foods, an art gallery, and an Italian market, opened its doors on upper Wisconsin Ave.
Visit their website to browse the wide selection of Umbrian products, read about their connections with local Italian artisans, learn about some delightful Umbrian wines and even how you can escape to Umbria and visit the land firsthand. And be sure to read their entertaining and educational blog and follow them on social media.
Discover the many facets of Umbria, online and in person, with Via Umbria.
