Interview with Frankie M
Share with us some of your background in regards to your Italian heritage and family.
I was born in New York City in 1947, to a Puerto Rican mother, and an Italian father. My father passed away when I was born, and I had never had a chance to meet my Italian relatives, since most still lived in Italy. My mother didn’t get a chance to even know her new husband very well and so I grew up, not knowing much about my father’s family. Several years later, my mom remarried and moved to Hoboken with her new husband, who had two children from a previous marriage I was always drawn to music since my earliest recollections, sparked by the wonderful Italian feasts that were such an important part of Hoboken culture. I only lived a block from where one of these feasts took place. During that time, I became fascinated by the wonderful Italian music that I heard, coming from the bandstand, such beautiful rich voices emanated from those events and many a time I was lulled to sleep hearing them. I often dreamed that one day I would be in front of the microphone on one of those band stands singing my heart out, proud of being Italian.
You have received several accolades for your work. What is something you’d still like to accomplish?
At this time in my life, I have all that I could wish for. I have three beautiful children and six grandchildren that I adore and love to be with. I can’t think of anything else that would make me happier.
What inspires you to write, whether it be music or a book?
I love talking to people. Many of the folks I have meet, have very fascinating lives and I just love hearing their stories and being inspired to write about their experiences in music or literature.
Who are some other artists past or present that you admire or would love to perform with?
I have always admired singers such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Bobby Rydell and Bobby Darin. They each had a unique style that would often be imitated but never quite duplicated.
You are clearly involved in many things that keep you busy. What do you enjoy doing in your “free time”?
Watching great biographical movies and spending time enjoying my family.
Do you have any new projects in the works you can share?
I’m working on a new album. I’m hoping to have it released by the summer of 2024.
Whether you enjoy novels or prefer quick reading – Events of an Ordinary Life is a captivating collection of short stories that keep you entertained and thinking. I’ve personally read the book and highly recommend it.
