2010 marked the 20th Anniversary of the Monoco Yacht Show – simply the greatest showcase of luxury yachting in the world. Also, after 18 years of overseeing one of the most successful yacht shows worldwide – arguably the most successful superyacht show – highly respected Managing Director Luc Pettavino had decided to step down from the Monaco Yacht Show.
In a statement Pettavino said, “After giving this a great deal of thought, and discussing it at length with my family, I am determined to dedicate more time to my various non-profit initiatives, mainly related to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The Monaco Yacht Show show will also continue to donate 50 percent of the entrance fees to benefit Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, as it has done for the past few years.”
Luc Pettavino, whose son suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, had been looking for a way not only to be useful in this pathology, but to do something really special that would help sufferers with this disorder. A unique luxury watch event was created and Pettavino was fortunate enough to gain the exceptional and valuable patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, who, since day one of the first charity auction has maintained his commitment to the charity each year.
Forty venerable watchmakers, including Girard-Perregaux, Breguet, Patek Philippe, Chopard, and more, have each created a special timepiece for the 2011 fourth annual Only Watch charity auction at the Hotel Hermitage in Monaco on September 23. Prior to the auction, the Only Watch 2011 collection will be showcased on a tour to luxury watch collecting capitals, such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York, Milan, and Geneva (August 30 to September 17). The tour will close in Monaco with a three-day exhibition (September 21 to 23) at the Monaco Yacht Show.
The complete Only Watch 2011 collection will be sold by horological auction house Antiquorum Auctioneers, and the watches will range from $8,000 to $600,000. All proceeds will be donated to research on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
TIME FOR A CURE FOR DUCHENNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
Only Watch exists only because of the creativity, the time and dedication, the expertise, and the quest for excellence of exceptionally motivated teams devoted to an extraordinary project.
Some of the world’s most innovative and renowned watchmakers have once again volunteered their help to support research on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a highly debilitating neuromuscular disease that affects one boy in 3,500 – approximately 250,000 children, teenagers and young adults around the globe.
Since the last edition of Only Watch, in September 2009, 2.5 million Euros were donated to 15 scientific partners and their teams, including 90 researchers and clinicians in 5 countries (France, Italy, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States). This is a rare opportunity to contribute effectively to exploring and developing new therapeutic treatments for this disease.
