Maserati unveils its first supercar in 15 years – the MC20
The Maserati MC20 is an exciting part of the Italian brands “latest rebirth strategy”, Car and Driver says, and the Italian company is planning for “ten new or heavily revised models by 2023”.
Described by Maserati as “beautiful and functional”, the MC20 will be powered by the “Nettuno” (Italian for Neptune), the first engine in this new chapter of the Trident’s history. The twin turbo 3.0-liter V6 will produce an impressive 621 brake horsepower and with a top speed of 202mph. Expectations are to do 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds and 0-124mph 8.8 seconds. The vehicle is built around a lightweight carbon fiber monocoque tub (weighing around 3,330 pounds).
Step inside, and the MC20 cabin is clearly driver focused. The car has two 10-inch screens – one for the cockpit and another for the multimedia system – and the console has been simplified with minimal buttons and distractions.
“We are setting the cornerstone for building the future of Maserati,” said Davide Grasso, Maserati’s COO, during an event revealing the new model in Modena, Italy. “The MC20 is the embodiment of our values, the first of its kind 100% made in Modena. MC20 is the model that starts our new era.”
Word is that Maserati has been running a prototype around its hometown of Modena, Italy since March, with expectations that the MC20 to go on sale in Europe by the end of 2020.
In the US, the MC20 will be available for pre-order on September 10 and is expected to go into production by the end of this year. However, the car isn’t expected to be released in the United States until the Fall 2021.
Of course there will be several variants of the MC20 to choose from, however, pricing is expected to start around $200,000.
